Create Links
This second step consists in creating, from an initial return, links to other corporations’ returns from the related or associated corporate group.
By linking the returns, Corporate Taxprep can:
- Automatically import relevant information from these returns into the R&A workchart.
- Use these links to compare values between the other returns for the group and the filing return to alert you to any discrepancies via diagnostics.
- Use the data in the linked returns to calculate the tax effect of a proposed allocation via the Allocation Scenarios on various forms thereby assisting you in determining the optimal allocation.
- Update the data in the R&A workchart of the filing corporation to reflect any subsequent changes to other returns in the group.

When you establish a link to another client file, the link is unidirectional. The link is used to access information contained in the initial return (i.e. the client file that you selected when you established the link) while you are working in the current client file.
Therefore to ensure that all of the corporate files are linked together, you must also establish links in the other returns in the group.

Any links that you have established in the R&A Workchart will be imported along with the other data in the R&A workchart when the import command is used.
Therefore, you can set up the links for all of the corporations in the group in one client file and then use the import command to copy all of these links to another data file.
In order to avoid having to repeat the import procedure, it is recommended that, if possible, the linking be established before using the import command.

Choose the return in which all corporations from the related or associated corporate group will be identified.
Where you process returns from a corporate group in which some corporations are related or associated to certain corporations, but not to others, select, as the initial return, the return of a corporation within the group with the largest number of related or associated corporations entered in Schedule 9, Related and Associated Corporations (Jump Code: 9). This way, you can create links for a larger number of corporations.

Once the initial return is opened, you can create links to client files of the corporate group. This step is performed from the Related and Associated Corporations Workchart (Jump Code: 9 WORKCHART) of the filing corporation’s return. To create links, proceed as follows:
- In the "General information - Filing corporation"
section of the Related and Associated
Corporations Workchart (Jump Code: 9
WORKCHART) first copy, enter the name of the corporate group in
the appropriate cell.
During import list and data from corporate group, the name of the group will be copied in each of the client files of the linked corporations. Then, you can use this information in the Client Manager to identify corporations that belong to a related or associated corporate group. - Display next copy of the workchart.
- In the "General information - Related and associated corporations" section of the copy, verify that the relationship code is indicated.
- In the "T2 Data Connection" section,
click
.
The Create Link Wizard is displayed. Click Next to begin. - Select the client file (the client file must have a .2xx extension where xx represents the corporation’s taxation year end.) of the corporation you want to link, and click Next.
- Select data that you want to import in the filing corporation’s return, and click Finish.
- Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each corporation in the group for which you want to link the client file.
- Save the client file.
Important: The client file you have selected should be closed. This way, you are sure to create a connection to a client file containing the latest modifications.
If you create a new copy of the Related and Associated Corporations Workchart, the program will prompt you to immediately create a link to a client file. Once the link and import are made, enter the relationship code.
Tip: If you do not have access to certain returns for corporations in the group, simply enter the pertinent information in the appropriate workchart copy of the initial return. Data from related or associated corporations that are entered can be imported in each of the other returns from the group.
