Uncoupling
You can uncouple the taxpayer and spouse’s current-year returns or planner returns at any time and create separate client files for each taxpayer’s return. For example, you can uncouple the returns of taxpayers who separated during the year.
When the taxpayer and spouse's returns are uncoupled in a client file, the dependants' returns are saved in both the client file of the taxpayer and spouse's returns.

To uncouple and save the spouse's return in a separate client file, proceed as follows:
- Display the taxpayer's return.
- In Form Identification - Identification and Other Client Information (Jump Code: ID), clear the Coupling: The taxpayer's and the spouse's returns are prepared together check box.
A warning message is displayed. - Click Yes to uncouple.
- Personal Taxprep creates a new file for the spouse's return and prompts you to save it.
Click Yes to display the Save As box and enter the name of the new client file.
Note: if you click No, the new client file may be saved later. - Click OK.
The active client file contains the taxpayer and dependants' return, if applicable.
